MISOGYNY DEBATE: PRESS & MEDIA REPRESENTATION
From Jane Austen on banknotes to Twitter abuse: a roundup of the debates in blogs, newspapers, radio and television.
On the 24th July 2013 the Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, announced that an image of Jane Austen would be printed on the £10 banknote. This decision came as a direct result of a three-month campaign led by Caroline Criado-Perez of The Women’s Room. Criado-Perez established the campaign in response to announcement by the Bank of England that it would be replacing the image of Elizabeth Fry on the £5 banknote with one of Winston Churchill, leaving a complete absence of historical women of merit on printed currency.
In the 48-hour period following the announcement of the campaign’s success, Criado-Perez was the target of numerous and sustained abusive communications via Twitter and email. These abusive messages threatened violence, rape, and death. A police investigation resulted in the arrest of several individuals. A second petition was then set up on 27th July 2013 calling for Twitter to install a button which would enable users to 'report abuse'. Over 100,000 people had signed this petition within days putting pressure on the Twitter UK office to take action. This prompted discussions about free speech and the accountability of those responsible for maintaining online platforms. Criado-Perez and several prominent female figures, including Labour MP Stella Creasy and Historian and broadcaster Mary Beard, began to speak publicly across a range of media about the issue of abuse directed towards women online. Despite arrests, the abuse and threats have abated but not ceased.
The materials archived in this post show the prominent debates and criticisms that occurred across various media between 23rd July 2013 and 5th August 2013. These have been placed chronologically within their respective groupings (Blogs, Online Publications and Podcasts, Radio, Newspaper, Television) so that those viewing these resources can chart the developments and discussions as they occurred.
